Message-ID: Hi Paleoclimate Working Group!, we are having our winter working group meeting in a new place: University of Wisconsin (details below). The focus of this meeting is advance the state of the art in applying coupled climate models to paleoclimate problems. We'd like to hear what you are doing with CCSM and we want to entrain broad community involvement in various ongoing and proposed simulations of the Paleoclimate Working group (visit this web page as well: http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/csm/working_groups/Paleo/experiments.html). If you want to give a presentation please let us know. And if you only plan on attending also please let us know. This meeting will continue and expand on themes that emerged from the previous two meetings. The direction of the PaleoWG that emerged from those meetings is summarized below--in this meeting we seek further input on these directions. ----------- The goal of the Paleoclimate Working Group is to improve our understanding of past climates and to improve ability to predict climate change by developing a better fundamental understanding of the physical, chemical, and biogeochemical components of the Earth System. CCSM is rapidly emerging as the de facto international standard for full coupled general circulation modeling of past climate change by building on the strengths of the modern climate CCSM effort. One of the key contributions of paleoclimate to the broader spectrum of climate science?and also of the Paleoclimate Working Group within the CCSM effort?is an assessment of model sensitivity to forcing factors (e.g. greenhouse gases, insolation changes, ocean circulation shifts) and evaluations of this sensitivity by direct comparison to paleoclimate proxies. Given the shortness of the observational record, paleoclimate modeling and data comparison often provides the only means of testing model predictions. The PaleoWG has developed a scientific plan that focuses on testing and evaluating CCSM sensitivities while addressing ?big? scientific questions, including: How much of climate variability is due to insolation variations and volcanic activity (THEME 1)? What are the mechanisms that drive abrupt climate change (THEME 2)? How do hydrologic, biogeochemical, and cryospheric processes feedback onto climate change (THEME 3)? What are the relative roles of greenhouse gases and heat transport in the maintenance of ?greenhouse? climates (THEME 4)? ----------- To this end we are conducting and have proposed to conduct a series of experiments, the results of which will be made available, as all CSL CCSM simulations are, to the PaleoWG community. For a listing of recent accomplishments of the PaleoWG (and CCSM as a whole) please visit here: The CSL Development Accomplishments Report is at http:// www.ccsm.ucar.edu/management/CSL/Dev-04-05accom.rpt.pdf, and the CSL Production Accomplishments Report is at http:// www.ccsm.ucar.edu/management/CSL/Prod-04-05accom.rpt.pdf and for a description of proposed simulations please visit here: The CSL proposal for CCSM?s Production allocation for February 2006- July 2007 can be viewed at http://www.ccsm.ucar.edu/management/ prodprop06.pdf. We have found an inn on campus that is nice and inexpensive. If you need a place to stay while at the PaleoWG meeting, please call the Lowell Inn at U. Wisc. at 608-256-2621. Gov't rate is $62/night and university rate is $77. There are only a few more rooms available, so call ASAP. Please tell the Lowell Inn that you are attending the CCSM Paleclimate Working Group Meeting and that you are paying for your own expenses. Here's the web page for the inn for more details: http://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/ce/ophtho/lodging.php (the Lowell Inn is the second one listed on the page).
