From cdeser at cgd.ucar.edu Thu Feb 1 08:17:57 2007 From: cdeser at cgd.ucar.edu (Clara Deser) Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2007 08:17:57 -0700 Subject: [CCSM-Polar] Conference Session Announcement (fwd) Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, My co-conveners and I would like to bring to your attention a special session entitled "The Influence of Sea Ice Variability on the Atmosphere and Ocean" at the "Air, Ocean, Earth and Ice on the Rock" Conference hosted by the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographical Society, the Canadian Geophysical Union and the American Meteorological Society, May 28 - June 1 2007 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Abstracts are due by February 15, 2007 and should be submitted via the web at http://www.cmos2007.ca/en/abstracts/index.htm. More information on the conference can be found at: http://www.cmos2007.ca/en/index.htm. Session description (Interdisciplinary session - I08) "The Influence of Sea Ice Variability on the Atmosphere and Ocean" Complex interactions take place between many components of the climate system, including the atmosphere, ocean, snow, and ice occur in polar regions. Variations in sea ice effects the global climate by altering the surface albedo and the exchanges of heat, moisture and momentum between the atmosphere and ocean. This session will address the impact of natural and anthropogenic variations in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice on the atmosphere and ocean from theoretical, numerical, and observational perspectives. Abstracts are welcome on research covering all time and space scales ranging from the influence of leads on the adjacent atmosphere and ocean, to the global atmospheric and oceanic response to the reduction in sea ice due to the increase in greenhouse gases. Phenomena of interest include the effect of sea ice variability on air-sea fluxes, boundary layer processes, clouds, storms and storm tracks, the circulation of the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, deep water formation and the thermohaline circulation, and the dominant patterns of atmospheric and oceanic variability. Conveners: Mike Alexander, Uma Bhatt, John Cassano and Clara Deser We look forward to hearing from you.
