These locations are cross town from each other. If you are staying at the Residence Inn, you may walk to the Center Green facility (just north from the hotel on the same street) and then take the NCAR Shuttle to the Mesa Lab. Here is the shuttle schedule: http://www.fin.ucar.edu/sass/transport/shuttle-cg.html Also, I need the speakers to email me your presentation no later than noon on Friday, 9 March 2007. I will put them all on one laptop that will be available at the meeting. Davis) Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 10:49:19 -0600 Subject: [CCSM-Polar] [Fwd: GRC Radiation and Climate - Message from the Chairs] Message-ID: Colleagues, Here is the just-released announcement of the next Gordon Research Conference on "Radiation & Climate". This topic is right up our alley, with two sessions this year explicitly about aerosols. GRCs are designed to go beyond the bleeding-edge with an "off-the-record" policy (one can not use GRC exchanges as "pers. comm."). Heated discussions are an integral part of the program. I'll be leading the one on cryospheric processes. The venue is always way off the beaten track to better promote discussions and foster collaborations (talks in the AM and evening and afternoons off). Please consider coming and contributing a poster on our excellent work here at LANL. The posters are a very important part of the GRCs with designated times every day and, if the past events are any indication, lots of food and drink to lubricate the flow of information. Last but not least, GRCs are democratically guided with the last session of the event being a secret-ballot election of the two-chair team for the 2011 installment (we voted for 2009 last time and they are the vice-chairs this summer). This is a way of controlling the direction of the series. Apply soon because place is limited. Dear Friends, Colleagues, and past GRC attendees, This is the first official announcement regarding this summer's Gordon Research Conference (GRC) entitled "Radiation and Climate". The conference will be held at: Colby-Sawyer College New London, New Hampshire 29 July to 3 August, 2007 The chairs are Bill Collins and Phil Russell and the vice-chairs are Qiang Fu and Christian Jakob. The website for this meeting is located under the main GRC website http://www.grc.org at http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2007&program=radclim. The theme of the fifth Gordon Research Conference on Radiation and Climate is "Integrating multiscale measurements and models for key climate questions". The meeting will feature lectures, posters, and discussion regarding these issues. The meeting will focus on insights from new types of satellite and in situ data and from new approaches to modeling processes in the climate system. The program on measurements will highlight syntheses of new satellite data on cloud, aerosols, and chemistry and syntheses of satellite and sub-orbital observations from field programs. The program on modeling will address both the evaluation of cloud-resolving and regional aerosol models using new types of measurements and the evidence for processes and physics missing from global models. If you wish to attend this conference, go to http://www.grc.org and click on 'FOR ATTENDEES'. Then, click on 'ONLINE APPLICATION', highlight in the drop-down menu 'Radiation and Climate', hit GO, and fill in the 'ONLINE CONFERENCE APPLICATION'. At that time, fill in the required information regarding posters if you wish to present one at the conference. If your application is accepted you will be notified via email (we generally have between 120 and 135 attendees). When your application is accepted you will receive a personalized registration link. Please complete the registration promptly after receiving the link. Registration has to take place at least 3 weeks prior to the conference start (i.e., before July 8, 2007). The registration fee is $775 USD for a single-occupancy room and $710 for a double-occupancy room. This fee covers accommodations and three meals/day from Sunday evening 29 July to Friday morning 3 August. You are advised to read the GRC instructions carefully. They are clear and concise, and the entire application/registration process should end up taking less than 30 minutes in total. Some funds are available primarily to help cover the travel and registration costs incurred by student attendees. As the level of funding is very finite, you should apply as soon as possible. There is much information available on the GRC's website (http://www.grc.org/). If you are not familiar with the GRC, it is worthwhile clicking on 'ABOUT GRC' and then on 'WHAT IS GRC?'. Also, check the 'SITE & TRAVEL LINKS' for Colby-Sawyer College. The format of this GRC is like that of previous GRCs: * Three lectures between breakfast and lunch * Free-time after lunch until dinner * Two lectures after dinner * Social gathering after 9:30 PM. There will, however, be poster sessions (optional attendance) Monday through Thursday between 4 and 6 PM. There is space for about 40 posters, so there may be a need to filter out requests for posters. One of the GRC's main goals is to bridge the gap between established scientists and those just entering, or on the verge of entering, the field. To help realize this goal, GRCs are characterized by plenty of time for informal discussions outside the lecture theatre, as alluded to in the previous paragraph. Moreover, GRC lectures and discussions are, in theory, "off-the-record". Please forward this email to anyone who you think might be interested in attending. Sincerely, Bill and Phil -- Anthony B.
