Another point:

If you can't reprocess existing data which doesn't have the names now proposed
(I suppose these could be used for future data?) CF could define your current
names as aliases of the new ones to make the existing data CF-compliant. We
have aliases in the table for just such situations where the name is revised
subsequently.
