<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><SPAN class=768031606-22012009> In
November/December I circulated a list of cryospheric variables for
suggested collection by the CMIP 5 models through the cryospheric community for
comment. An updated version of the document with revisions following input from
the community is available at</SPAN></FONT></DIV>

pointed out the need to have new variables agreed on by this cf-metadata
discussion list and I have highlighted in the document in red, new
variable names which follow the CF standard name conventions. I started
this process before Christmas, but due to the longer SH summer break have
only just completed it. Many of the variables have been
selected so that the cryospheric community can better understand thermodynamic
and dynamic budgets of sea ice and additional variables have been added to
categorise snow cover and permafrost regions. Some of the
variables particularly in relation to the ice sheets are unlikely to be
available in many models for CMIP5 timeframe but have been included for the
period when the climate community Earth system models do include ice
sheet/permafrost models.</SPAN></FONT></DIV>
